In the first part of this series, we explored the nature of the spiritual war and its key players. Now, as we move deeper into understanding this ongoing battle, it’s time to focus on the divine equipment God provides to believers: the Armour of God. This armour is not physical but spiritual, designed to equip Christians for the challenges of the unseen war.
Victory in this battle is not achieved through human strength or strategy but by standing firm in God’s power and wearing the armour He provides.
The Command to Be Equipped
Before diving into the specific elements of the armour, it’s important to understand the command to put it on. Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, emphasises the importance of readiness:
- Ephesians 6:11: “Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
The phrase “put on” implies intentionality and action. God supplies the armour, but believers must actively wear it to stand firm against the enemy’s attacks.
The Six Components of the Armor of God
Paul outlines six pieces of armour, each representing a vital aspect of spiritual defence and ffense. Let’s examine each piece and its significance.
1. The Belt of Truth
- Ephesians 6:14: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.”
- The belt of truth is the foundation of the armour, holding everything together. Truth is both the Word of God and the integrity of living according to it. Without truth, the rest of the armour is ineffective.
- John 8:32: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
- Ephesians 6:14: “With the breastplate of righteousness in place.”
- The breastplate protects the heart, symbolising God’s righteousness imputed to believers through Christ. It also calls for righteous living, guarding against sin and temptation.
- Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
- Ephesians 6:15: “And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”
- The shoes represent the readiness to share and live out the gospel. They provide stability and the ability to advance in the spiritual war.
- Romans 10:15: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
4. The Shield of Faith
- Ephesians 6:16: “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
- The shield of faith deflects the enemy’s attacks, including doubts, fears, and temptations. Faith is our trust in God’s promises and power.
- Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
5. The Helmet of Salvation
- Ephesians 6:17: “Take the helmet of salvation.”
- The helmet protects the mind, reminding believers of their identity in Christ and the assurance of salvation. A secure mind is essential in resisting the enemy’s lies.
- 2 Corinthians 10:5: “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
6. The Sword of the Spirit
- Ephesians 6:17: “And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
- The sword is the only offensive weapon in the armour, representing the power of God’s Word to combat lies and temptations.
- Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.”
The Role of Prayer in Spiritual Warfare
Although not listed as a piece of the armour, Paul concludes the passage by emphasising the importance of prayer:
- Ephesians 6:18: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Prayer activates and sustains the armour. It is through prayer that believers connect with God’s power, seek His guidance, and intercede for others in the battle.

Ephesians 6:13: “Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
