The question, “Are you ashamed of Jesus Christ?” is one that pierces the heart of every believer. It’s a question that challenges us to examine our faith, our loyalty, and our commitment to the One who gave His life for us. In a world that often ridicules faith and glorifies rebellion against God, this question carries profound weight.
Jesus Himself posed this challenge to His followers:
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).
This is not just a warning; it is a call to action. To live unashamed of Christ is to boldly proclaim His name, to stand firm in His truth, and to align our lives with His eternal purposes. Let us explore what it means to be unashamed of Jesus, the consequences of our choice, and the blessings that come from living a life fully committed to Him.
1. What Does It Mean to Be Ashamed of Jesus?
To be ashamed of Jesus Christ is to deny or hide your faith out of fear, insecurity, or a desire for worldly approval. It is to prioritise the opinions of people over the truth of God. This can manifest in subtle ways:
- Remaining silent when His name is mocked.
- Avoiding opportunities to share your faith.
- Compromising biblical values to fit in with societal norms.
Even Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, faced this struggle. On the night Jesus was arrested, Peter denied Him three times out of fear (Luke 22:54-62). However, Peter’s story didn’t end there. After Jesus’ resurrection, Peter repented, was restored, and became a fearless proclaimer of the gospel, unashamed even unto death.
2. Jesus Was Never Ashamed of Us
Think for a moment about the depth of Jesus’ love for you. He was not ashamed to identify with us, even in our brokenness.
“For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2).
Despite the mockery, humiliation, and pain, Jesus willingly bore the shame of the cross to secure our salvation. He was rejected, beaten, and crucified, not because He had to, but because He chose to out of love for you and me.
When we hesitate to acknowledge Him, we must remember this profound truth: Jesus was not ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters (Hebrews 2:11). How, then, can we be ashamed of Him?
3. Why Should We Never Be Ashamed of Jesus?
He Is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6).
There is no other path to salvation. When we declare Jesus as Lord, we proclaim the only truth that can save souls and transform lives.
He Is Our Advocate
“Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before My Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32).
When we boldly declare our faith in Christ, He becomes our advocate before the Father. Imagine standing before the throne of God and hearing Jesus say, “This one is mine.”
He Offers Eternal Life
“Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
The gospel is the good news of eternal life. To be ashamed of Jesus is to withhold the greatest gift anyone can receive.
He Is Worthy of All Honor
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:12).
Jesus is the King of Kings, and He is worthy of our complete devotion, praise, and public acknowledgement.
4. Living Boldly for Christ
Living unashamed of Jesus requires courage, commitment, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. It means living a life that reflects His love, truth, and grace. Here are practical ways to live boldly for Christ:
Proclaim His Name
“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15).
Speak about Jesus openly in your conversations, on social media, and in your actions. Sharing your testimony can be a powerful way to proclaim His name.
Stand Firm in Persecution
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10).
Persecution for your faith is a badge of honour in God’s ingdom. When you face rejection, criticism, or hardship for standing with Christ, remember that you are blessed.
Live as a Witness
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Your actions speak louder than words. By living a life of integrity, kindness, and humility, you point others to Christ.
Trust in His Strength
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
Living unashamed requires supernatural strength. Lean on God’s power to help you stand firm in your faith.
5. The Consequences of Being Ashamed of Christ
Jesus made it clear that there are eternal consequences for being ashamed of Him. “If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when He comes in His glory” (Luke 9:26).
Imagine standing before the throne of God and realising you missed opportunities to declare your faith. Conversely, imagine the joy of hearing Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23). The choice is clear.
6. The Blessings of Living Unashamed
Eternal Rewards
“Those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever” (Daniel 12:3).
Boldly proclaiming Christ stores up treasures in heaven.
Deeper Relationship with God
Living unashamed strengthens your faith and draws you closer to God. You experience His power and presence in new and profound ways.
Transforming Lives
When you boldly share the gospel, you become a vessel through which God changes lives. The ripple effect of your obedience can touch countless souls.
Behold, He Stands at the Door
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with Me” (Revelation 3:20).
Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart. He is calling you to live boldly and unashamedly for Him. Will you open the door? Will you declare with confidence:
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I repent for the times I have been hesitant or afraid to proclaim Your name. Give me boldness, courage, and strength to live unashamedly for You. May my life bring glory to Your name and lead others to salvation. Help me to stand firm in my faith and honor You in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now is the time to rise. Be bold and courageous, and be unashamed of Jesus Christ. He stands at the door—will you open it?
