In an age of anxiety, restlessness, and constant turmoil, the promise of peace feels elusive to many. People search for peace in all the wrong places—wealth, relationships, power, or fleeting pleasures—only to find themselves emptier than before. Amid this chaotic backdrop, God offers a peace that surpasses all understanding, one that can anchor our hearts and minds regardless of circumstances. Yet many yawn at this gift, indifferent to its power and transformative potential. These are the Peace Yawners—those who neglect, misunderstand, or dismiss the peace of God.

This blog is a wake-up call. It challenges the Peace Yawners to recognise what they are missing and embrace the peace that only God can give. It’s a call to awaken from spiritual apathy, find rest in Christ, and live as peacemakers in a world desperate for hope.

1. Who Are the Peace Yawners?

The term Peace Yawners describes those who hear about God’s peace but fail to respond with enthusiasm, gratitude, or action. They know about the peace of God but remain disengaged, preferring the noise and distractions of the world.

Characteristics of Peace Yawners

Peace yawners are not a new phenomenon. Jesus encountered them during His ministry:
“For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed” (Matthew 13:15).

Today, this warning remains relevant. Are we yawning at God’s peace, treating it as optional or unimportant while our hearts remain restless?

2. The Biblical Promise of Peace

The peace that God offers is not the fleeting peace of the world but a profound, unshakeable peace rooted in His presence. It is a peace that transforms our inner being and radiates outward into our relationships and communities.

Peace with God

The foundation of all true peace is reconciliation with God. Our sin separates us from Him, but through Jesus, we are made right with God.
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

This peace is not just an emotional state but a restored relationship with the Creator.

The Peace of God

Paul describes a peace that goes beyond human understanding:
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

This peace calms our fears, quiets our anxieties, and sustains us in the storms of life.

Peace with Others

The peace of God compels us to live in harmony with others. Paul writes:
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

This peace is not passive; it requires intentional effort to pursue reconciliation and harmony.

3. Why Do People Yawn at Peace?

Despite its profound value, many people yawn at the peace of God. This indifference stems from various barriers that prevent them from experiencing and embracing it.

a. Misplaced Priorities

Many prioritise worldly achievements, wealth, and pleasure over spiritual peace. They chase after temporary things, neglecting the eternal gift of God’s peace. Jesus warned against this mindset:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20).

b. A Lack of Faith

Doubt and disbelief prevent many from trusting in God’s promises. Like the disciples in the storm, they cry out, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38), forgetting that Jesus is in control.

c. Noise and Distraction

The constant busyness and noise of modern life drown out God’s still, small voice. Many fail to heed the invitation:
“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

d. Fear of Surrender

God’s peace requires surrender—letting go of control and trusting in His sovereignty. For many, this is a difficult step.

4. The Dangers of Being a Peace Yawner

Failing to embrace God’s peace has significant spiritual and practical consequences:

  1. Spiritual Drift: Without God’s peace, our faith can waver, leaving us vulnerable to doubt and despair.
  2. Broken Relationships: A lack of inner peace often leads to conflict with others.
  3. Missed Opportunities: When we fail to live in God’s peace, we cannot effectively reflect His love and hope to the world.

Paul urges us to stay awake spiritually:
“So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

5. Awakening to God’s Peace

a. Reconcile with God

Peace begins with accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus bridged the gap between humanity and God.
“For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14).

b. Cultivate Inner Peace

To experience God’s peace, we must intentionally seek Him through prayer, Scripture, and worship.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

c. Become a Peacemaker

Jesus calls us to be peacemakers in our relationships and communities.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

Being a peacemaker reflects God’s character and brings His Kingdom to earth.

6. The Benefits of Embracing God’s Peace

Rest for the Soul

Jesus invites us to find rest in Him:
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

b. Strength in Trials

God’s peace sustains us during difficulties.
“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

c. Freedom from Anxiety

Paul encourages us to replace worry with prayer:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).

d. A Witness to the World

Living in God’s peace makes us effective witnesses of His love and power.

7. A Call to Awaken

It’s time to stop yawning at the promise of peace and start living in its fullness. The world desperately needs people who embody God’s peace, bringing hope and healing to those around them.

Prayer for Peace:
Lord, forgive me for the times I have taken Your peace for granted. Today, I surrender my heart to You and ask for Your peace to fill me completely. Teach me to live in Your presence, trust in Your promises, and reflect Your peace to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Encouragement

God’s peace is a gift, not something to be earned or ignored. It is a divine reality that transforms our lives and equips us to bring hope to others. Jesus is calling you today:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27).

Awaken to His peace. Embrace it. Live it. And share it with a world that is longing for hope. The time to stop yawning and start living in God’s peace is now.
