Introduction: From Torment to Liberation

Life can sometimes feel like an unending cycle of torment. Whether it’s the weight of guilt, the chains of addiction, the sting of rejection, or the relentless whispers of fear, torment can rob us of peace, joy, and purpose. But God has not called us to live in torment. Through Christ, we are offered complete liberation—a freedom that breaks every chain and restores us to wholeness.

In this post, we will explore what it means to be tormented, the liberation Christ offers, and how to walk in the freedom that is ours in Him.

1. Understanding Torment: The Weight of Bondage

Torment is not just a physical or emotional struggle—it is a spiritual battle. The Bible describes the enemy as one who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Torment is one of the enemy’s tools to keep us bound, paralyzed by fear, guilt, or shame.

a. Types of Torment:

b. The Spiritual Root of Torment

Torment is often rooted in sin, brokenness, or lies from the enemy. The Bible warns in 1 Peter 5:8:
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Reflection Question:

What torment in your life feels like a roaring lion, seeking to consume your peace?

2. God’s Promise of Liberation

The Bible is clear: God does not want His children to live in torment. Through Christ, He offers freedom from every chain and stronghold.

a. Jesus, Our Liberator

Jesus declared His mission to set the captives free in Luke 4:18:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.”

b. Freedom Through the Cross

At the cross, Jesus bore every burden, sin, and torment so that we could live in freedom.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:36

c. The Gift of Peace

God’s liberation doesn’t just remove torment—it replaces it with His peace.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27

3. Steps to Liberation: Embracing Freedom in Christ

a. Acknowledge the Source of Torment

Liberation begins with identifying the areas where torment has taken root.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” – Psalm 139:23

b. Surrender to God

Freedom comes when we release control and place our burdens at the feet of Jesus.
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

c. Renounce the Lies of the Enemy

The enemy uses lies to keep us in bondage. Replace his lies with the truth of God’s Word.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32

d. Forgive and Let Go

Unforgiveness is one of the greatest sources of torment. Let go of bitterness and release others to God.
“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13

e. Walk in the Spirit

The Holy Spirit empowers us to live in victory over torment.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:17

4. Living as the Liberated

Once God sets us free, we are called to walk in that freedom daily. Liberation is not a one-time event but a lifestyle of surrender and reliance on God.
